We are part of “Talking About Suicide Prevention with Polish & Eastern European Communities” at the Repertory Theatre in Birmingham.
The event was supported by the Local Government Association as part of the national suicide prevention strategy to help organisations from across the city to understand our Eastern European citizens perspectives on suicide, self harm and mental health as these are communities that are over represented in local suicide statistics. The event brought together community and voluntary sector organisations, and public sector stakeholders, to hear from experts and community members and explore opportunities for action.
This years event was hosted by Slovak TV celebrity Mr. Peter Sklar whom welcomed our distinguished guests; the Slovak Ambassador HE Lubomir Rehak, Mr. Martin Hosek from the Czech Embassy, Mr. Pavol Hammel, Dr. Telensky & guests from all over the UK.
The entertainment was provided by the amazing DuoBand and DJ Brano who kept everyone dancing until 3am. The videos from the event can be found on our FB page together with fabulous pictures from Sweedovci photography.
We had a really amazing evening full of laughter, dancing and singing until early hours of the morning, excellent food and out of this world raffle prizes from our main sponsors ŠKODA UK and Dr. Telensky. Can't wait for our next event.
Great fun was had by all at yet another event for Czech & Slovak community in West Midlands, where children and also some adults stood for the first time on the ice, all learning to skate together. Some have seriously improved.
A big thank you to Planet ice at Solihull for welcoming us at their wonderful venue.
It was our 4th Autumn family event that we have organized, in St. Francis Irish Centre, for Czech & Slovak families and what an amazing family event it was. Fabulous Goulash soup with Czech bread was served, washed down by Czech/ Slovak beer & spirits, and the wonderful Douband created an amazing atmosphere. DFS Brezička did a short performance of folk singing with play on accordion. Day out for families in the beautiful countryside of Shrewsbury, started with a farrier demonstration, followed by horse feeding, riding lessons and finished with a picnic on the wild meadow. It was a unforgettable experience for the children as it was for most of them, the first time they got to touch, feed or sit on a horse. Parents have joined in and really enjoyed the experience. Further visits to equestrian center will be arranged in the future.

How better to finish the school year other than by having a fairy tale trail with an open fire. We had a Three Beatles (very old Czechoslovak story) visiting us in our Fairy tale garden. At the start the children were welcomed by the pirate and the Cinderella. Each child received a map with the story trail stops, were they had a tasks/challenges to solve for them and their parents. At the end there was lots of rewards for them, but they especially enjoyed roasting their own špekačky on the open fire !!!

Children attending Slovak schools in the UK had an amazing opportunity to join other Slovak children from all over the world at a ski camp in Slovakia organized by University Mateja Bella, Banska Bystrica. They spent a week in the beautiful mountains in Donovaly, where they did two sessions a day of skiing and in the evening they had Slovak lessons. Amazing opportunity for children to make new friends, learn Slovak language and how to ski.
Our blog about our joys and sorrows. Activities, short articles and plenty of photos.
